Assunto:  [gen-ocidio] Genetic Modification Technology: Attitudes of Irish University Scientists.

General Release
FYI
Below is an abstract of a paper to be given to the Society of General
Microbiology
meeting at the University of Ulster, Coleraine on the 17th of Sept. 1999.
It is a small section of a larger study been carried out here at the
University of Limerick. Naturally the abstract only contains a fraction of
the results. Feel free to contact me for further information.

Genetic Modification Technology: Attitudes of Irish University Scientists.

Shane H. Morris and Catherine C. Adley
Department of Chemical and Environmental Sciences, University of Limerick,
Limerick, Ireland.

Genetic Modification(GM) is currently been intensely debated in Ireland and
throughout Europe. There are many groups with varying stand points on the
issue. The intensity of the debate is reflected in the fact there has been a
steady growth in the media coverage of GM related issues. This has
culminated in the fact that from January to June 1999 there has been 283
articles on GM issues between the three main daily broad-sheets in Ireland.
Academic scientists have failed to make any substantial impact in the media
thus their overall views are greatly unknown and unsubstantiated.
GM policy in Ireland still has not been officially stated by the current
Government. The Government has attempted to run a unique type of public
consultation process to allow for input into the formulation of it's policy.
The process ran into several severe problems which ended in a boycott of
the final day of a two day debate by the vast majority of the anti-GM Non
Government organisations. In this process the academic science
representatives took a pro-GM stand. Were the academic representatives
justified in their pro-GM stance as a reflection of the science community?
Perceptions and attitudes in a sample of university based academic
scientists will be presented. The results of academic scientists (n=114,
Professors=20.4%, Ph.D.=73.5%, Masters=4.4%, B.Sc.=1.8%) surveyed, found
that 80.0% believe that there should be no immediate complete ban of all GM
foods and their production, 11.0% believe there should be a ban. The vast
majority of scientists disagree with the destruction of Government licensed
experimental GM crop trails (76.1%=Stongly disagree; 8.8%=somewhat
disagree). Levels of trust in information apropos of GM crops from the
biotechnology industry and concern/ pressure groups are low. Regarding
applications of GM, findings show attitudes towards genetic modification
were context-dependent. Most scientists would buy genetically modified food
if they were at the same price as non-GM food with the notable exception of
GM baby-food.
50.8% of scientists believe that the media coverage of GM food has been
unfair, 22.8% believe the media was neutral and 26.3% believe it has been
fair.
